A Window into our ministry.....

Prayer Shawl Ministry
PSALM -- Prayers, Shawls, And Loving Ministry

ministry window
The PSALMists are the Prayer Shawl Ministry of Lutheran Church of the Resurrection.
The group meets on the first Saturday of the month. Prayer along with knitting, crocheting, and looming make our morning go quickly.

PSALMists work to create prayer shawls, laprobes, prayer cloths, as well as hats and scarves which are given to local social service agencies.

Working with our Hands

New hands are always welcome!!

We gathered on a recent Saturday to pray, talk, share patterns and more. Members work on current projects. We bring finished prayer shawls to the table for more prayers. Members have also worked on more red/white/blue squares and scarves/hats for the mitten-hat tree. Those scarves and hats will be given to a Social Service agency for distribution to those in need of warm winter apparel.

On December 14, Pastor Tony blessed the 3 Red, White, Blue prayer shawl blankets. These shawls were displayed for the congregation to see and offer prayers for members of our congregation who have sons or daughters serving in the military. Members of the congregation were invited to add their prayers to these prayer shawls. The shawl blankets were then presented to the families of these young people who may be sent to fight in war zones. We ask all to pray for all the young men and women who are so valiantly serving in the armed forces.

prayer shawl

This prayer shawl was completed by one of the group and brought to a recent meeting so that all in the group would offer prayers for one who will receive this shawl.

prayer & bells

At the Handbell Concert sponsored by Acorn Library, one of the Glory Ringers was presented with a prayer shawl. This ringer fell only a few days before the concert and broke a bone in the ankle. The prayer shawl is like an extra hug from God -- a reminder of God's healing powers, God's love, and God's strength.

At a recent meeting we welcomed a new member. Together we share finished projects, discuss our mission, and pray for those who have and who will receive the work our hands have crafted.
Prayer Shawls remind us all of the comfort that God provides to each of us.

At a recent meeting we work on shawls and then offer additional prayers on the completed projects.

At a recent meeting one of our members models a newly completed Prayer Shawl. This one has Pockets -- to keep the hands warm and comfy.

More About Prayer Shawls
The Prayer Shawl Ministry was started in 1998 by Janet Bristow and Victoria Galo. Prayers and blessings are knit or crocheted into each shawl. The love of knitting and crocheting along with a love of God/creator has been combined into a powerful ministry.
These shawls are called Prayer Shawls, Comfort Shawls, or Peace Shawls. What goes into each shawl is prayers. Prayers for the recipient are woven into the shawl with each stitch.
Shawls can be given in times of stress, for comfort, to celebrate something, for someone who is grieving. A shawl could be presented in honor of a baptism, a wedding, retirement, moving to a new home, illness, death, for an anniversay and more. there are many reasons for giving shawls. Each shawl reminds the recipient that someone has prayed for them and provides needed comfort.

Where do our shawls go?

  • Shawls are given to friends, family, coworkers, church members, extended family.
  • We have sent prayer cloths to the military (via the "Prayers for Troops Ministry"). For more information about this ministry click on one of the following links.
  • 8" squares have been sent to help the San Diego Wildfire Blanket Project. The goal of this group is to have a blanket for each family that was victimized by the wildfires that hit San Diego recently. squares
  • Virginia Tech in Blacksburg Virginia; Northern Illinois University
  • And other places as our hearts and the Lord direct!!
